Goalkeeper camps: what makes one worth the money

A goalkeeper who spends a week in an outfield session has had an expensive holiday.

The question that matters

How many hours per day are spent on goalkeeper-specific work, with a goalkeeper coach, on a goalkeeping surface?

Some camps advertise a goalkeeper programme that amounts to one specialist session per week. Others run a genuinely parallel programme. The websites can look identical.

What to ask for

  • The number of goalkeeper-specific sessions per week
  • The goalkeeper coach to keeper ratio
  • Whether keepers rejoin the outfield group for tactical work and matches
  • Whether the pitches have proper goalmouth areas, or the keepers train on a worn strip

Video analysis

Increasingly offered, occasionally meaningful. Ask whether the child leaves with the footage, and whether anyone talks them through it.

Ages

Goalkeeping is one of the few areas where mixing a 12-year-old and a 17-year-old in the same session is genuinely unproductive. Ask how the groups are split.

Are goalkeeper camps more expensive?
